2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

By Justin Cupler | September 24th, 2019

The compact crossover rose to dominance with its ability to combine utility, drivability, and style in one small vehicle. Today, these crossovers are adding another feather in their caps, efficiency, with the influx of hybrid models, including the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Which of these thrifty people haulers fits your Waukegan area family’s needs the best? Find out below.

The Subaru Crosstrek went through a complete redesign in 2018, but like most Subaru redesigns, this was more of a refresh than a full redo. This redesign also brought about the reintroduction of the Crosstrek Hybrid. In terms of design, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is less of crossover and more or a high-riding hatchback. Speaking of high-riding, the Crosstrek Hybrid has an 8.7-inch ride height, which is 0.6 inches higher than the RAV4 Hybrid, making it very off-road-friendly.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is all-new. It boasts a rugged SUV-like design with an upright stance, hard body lines, and a bold grille. This look is a nice balance between a crossover and SUV, giving buyers who need a more driver-friendly crossover but like the looks of an SUV the perfect option.

In terms of size, other than the Crosstrek’s ride height, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is significantly larger in every dimension.

Measurement Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Difference
Length 180.9 inches 175.8 inches +5.1 inches
Width 73 inches 71 inches +2 inches
Height 67 inches 62.8 inches +4.2 inches
Wheelbase 105.9 inches 104.9 inches +1 inch
Ground Clearance 8.1 inches 8.7 inches -0.6 inches
Curb weight 3,710 to 3,800 pounds 3,726 pounds -16 to +74 inches

Advantage: 2019 Subaru Crosstrek

  •       Smaller and easier to manage
  •       Higher ride height
  •       Sharp hatchback look

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

  •       SUV-inspired looks
  •       Rugged styling
  •       Stands out in a crowded vanilla segment

Inside, the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid boasts a sleek interior that includes sharp angles, creases, and a popup center screen that give it a sleek and modern look without being over the top. It also features loads of blue accents, stitching, and ambient lighting.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s cabin has more of a horizontally oriented layout, which widens things a bit, but it also adds a little creativity with an angular instrument cluster hood. Add to that a dashtop infotainment screen, a stubby gear shifter, and large, glove-friendly HVAC knobs, and the RAV4 Hybrid delicately balances luxury, sport, and ruggedness.

In terms of features, the Crosstrek Hybrid is the top trim level in the model’s lineup, so it boasts loads of advanced interior goodies. The standard features list includes a six-way power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob with blue stitching, keyless access and push-button ignition, automatic climate control, the Starlink Multimedia Plus infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Magellan navigation, SiriusXM, and much more. While this is loads of standard equipment, its $34,995 starting price is about $7,000 higher than the base RAV4 LE Hybrid.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s base LE trim comes very well-equipped too, but it lacks a bit relative to the Crosstrek Hybrid. Its standard goodies match many of the Crosstrek’s, but it falls short with its cloth seating, 7-inch touchscreen, lack of Android Auto, single USB port, and a few other areas. Overall, though it is quite similar. Buyers who insist on matching the Crosstrek Hybrid’s standard features can do so in the RAV4’s higher trims, but there is no way to get Android Auto in the RAV4.

In terms of sizing, the Crosstrek offers tons of room in front shoulder room, rear headroom, rear legroom, and rear shoulder room, but the RAV4 Hybrid takes the win in all other key measurements. It also takes a huge win in cargo room with up to 21.7 cubic feet more cargo room with the rear seats upright. Toyota has not revealed the RAV4 Hybrid’s maximum cargo room with the seats up, but it is safe to say it will easily trump the Crosstrek’s 43.1 cubic feet of space.

  •       Slick combination of luxury, ruggedness, and sportiness
  •       Plenty of premium goodies in base model
  •       Spacy cargo area

Hybrids are rarely considered fast vehicles, and the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is that in a nutshell with its 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors combine for 148 horsepower. This power flows through a continuously variable transmission and out to all four wheels for a nine-second 0-to-60 time. Where the Crosstrek Hybrid shines is thriftiness, as its plug-in-hybrid powertrain allows up to 17 miles of all-electric driving and 90 mpg-e. Once the battery depletes, though, the Crosstrek’s fuel economy plummets to 35 mpg combined.

The RAV4 Hybrid’s hybrid powertrain ships 219 horsepower to all four wheels via electric all-wheel drive and a CVT for a peppy 7.5-second 0-to-60 time. It also delivers incredible fuel economy at 41 mpg city, 38 highway, and 40 combined.

Neither vehicle is great for towing a trailer, but the RAV4 Hybrid’s 1,750-pound towing capacity beats the Crosstrek Hybrid by 750 pounds.
