Toyota Avalon Hybrid Vs Toyota Camry Hybrid

By Justin Cupler | June 13th, 2019

Toyota is the king of the hybrid realm with a lineup chock-full with these electrified green machines. Looking for something roomy? Garber Fox Lake Toyota serving the Waukegan area has two hybrid options in the 2019 Avalon Hybrid and the 2019 Camry Hybrid. Which one is best for your family? Find out below.

Exterior

A quick look and you may easily mix up the Toyota Corolla and Avalon. We’d have to forgive you for that because they share many components and a lot of design cues. Put them side-by-side, though, and there is no mixing them up.

In 2019, the entire Toyota Avalon lineup, including the Avalon Hybrid, went through a redesign. This redesign follows in the footsteps of its smaller platform mate, the Toyota Camry, making the Avalon Hybrid longer, wider and sportier than ever. Sure, it’s no sports sedan, but the Avalon Hybrid looks better than ever. Other than a longer body and platform, the Avalon stands out from the Camry with its unique nose and headlights, more pointed taillights, downward-swooping character lines on the rear doors, and the larger rear-quarter window.

As a sub-luxury sedan, the 2019 Avalon Hybrid boasts loads of premium exterior features. This long list starts with a noise-reducing windshield, 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, heated mirrors with power adjustability, 17-inch alloy wheels, and much more.

If you put the 2019 Camry next to the Avalon, its 3.2-inch-shorter body stands out, but you will also notice some big differences in other details. The most noticeable difference is the Camry is a far simpler model in its base LE trim, as it includes standard steel wheels, grays grille, and other basic items. This isn’t to say the Camry lacks any premium features because there are plenty of goodies in its higher trims, including 18-inch wheels and full-LED headlights.

Interior

Inside, the Avalon’s status as a sub-luxury sedan puts it a step above the Camry. With this status comes loads of premium standard features, including leatherette upholstery, a 9-inch touchscreen, an eight-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a full-length soft-touch center console, and more.

The 2019 Toyota Camry’s cabin is far more mainstream with its integrated touchscreen, cloth seating, and more. Despite being more mainstream, the Camry still has plenty of desirable standard features, including a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, a rearview camera, and more. On the options list is leather upholstery, an 8-inch touchscreen, and more that bring it closer to the Avalon.

With its larger platform, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is significantly roomier than the Camry in nearly every key measurable.

Performance

Under their hoods, the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid and 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid are virtually identical. They both use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 650-volt electric motor for propulsion. They both use the same e-CVT unit too. The Avalon, however, has a 7-horsepower advantage to help with its larger and heavier body. On the flip-side, the lighter Camry is 0.4 seconds quicker to 60 mph.

While those differences are insignificant, the big gap comes in fuel economy. Despite its lower cost, the base Camry Hybrid LE comes standard with a more-advanced lithium-ion battery, pushing its fuel economy to 51 mpg city, 53 highway, and 52 combined. This gives it up to a 9 mpg combined advantage over the Avalon. The entire Avalon lineup and the SE and higher Camry models all use a less power-dense nickel-metal-hydride battery pack.
