Toyota Avalon Vs. Toyota Camry: Sibling Sedans With Vast Differences

By Justin Cupler | March 7th, 2019

Family sedans are a great way to haul all the troops without opting for a larger crossover or minivan and sacrificing driveability. Toyota has a pair of great sedans in the 2019 Camry and the all-new 2019 Avalon. While these two are closely related, Toyota target vastly different types of buyers with them. So, which is for our McHenry area buyers, the 2019 Camry or 2019 Avalon? Find out below.

Exterior

The Toyota Avalon and Toyota Camry have long shared a relationship beyond the “Toyota” badges. They also have shared platforms and various components throughout the years. This carries into the latest generation.

The Toyota Camry went through a full redesign in 2018, ushering in a brand-new look that it lower and wider than previous years. It also gained sportier touches that this family sedan has long lacked.

The Toyota Avalon took an extra year to get its redesign, as it just received its newest look in 2019. Like in previous generations, the fifth-generation Avalon shares much of its design with the eighth-generation Camry, including the lower and wider standard. Where the Avalon sets itself apart are its front and rear ends. Up front, the Avalon boasts a larger and bolder grille, and wider headlights. Around back, the Avalon has less dramatically styled taillights with a light strip connecting them.

Being the more premium model, the 2019 Toyota Avalon also has more premium standard exterior features, including LED headlights and taillights, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon is 195.9 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, and 56.5 inches tall. It rides on a 113-inch wheelbase and weighs 3,560 to 3,704 pounds.

Though the 2019 Toyota Camry sits atop the same platform as the Avalon, it rides on a 1.8-inch shorter wheelbase. The Camry’s body is also is shorter and narrower at 192.1 to 192.7 inches long and 72.4 inches wide, but it’s taller than the Avalon at 56.9 inches tall. With fewer features and less sound-deadening materials, the Camry is lighter at 3,241 to 3,549 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • More standard features
  • More upscale appearance
  • Traditional looks

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Camry

  • Sportier take on the family sedan
  • Smaller and easier to manage

Interior

Inside, the similarities between the 2019 Toyota Camry and 2019 Toyota Avalon’s similarities are unmistakable. Both models’ center consoles have distinct splits by the gear shifter where the shifter bezel appears to shot toward the driver and the cup holders shoot off toward the passenger. Once you move up to the center stack, though, the similarities disappear. The Camry boasts a distinct “Y” outline surrounding the touchscreen and climate controls, while the Avalon’s center stack shoot straight upward into a “floating” infotainment screen.

The Avalon also features more of a horizontally oriented dash that makes it feel a little wider. The 2019 Camry, on the other hand, features a sportier swoop that flows from the right side of the “Y” accent and across the passenger’s side of the dash.

The 2019 Avalon also sets itself apart with its more premium standard features. These include leatherette seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power front seats, a 9-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, Entune 3.0 Audio Plus, and much more. The Camry is much simpler with its standard Entune 3.0 system, six-speaker audio, cloth seating, and manual seats.

In its front seats, the 2019 Toyota Avalon offers 38.5 inches of headroom, 42.1 inches of legroom, 58.3 inches of shoulder room, and 55.8 inches of hip room. The 2019 Camry matches the Avalon’s headroom, but it comes up short in headroom by 0.2 inches, shoulder room by 0.6 inches, and hip room by 0.4 inches.

In the rear, the Avalon has 37.9 inches of headroom, 40.3 inches of legroom, 57.1 inches of shoulder room, and 54.8 inches of hip room. The 2019 Camry has an extra 0.1 inches of headroom, but it comes up short in legroom by 2.3 inches, shoulder room by 1.4 inches, and hip room by 0.1 inches.

In its trunk, the Avalon has 16.09 cubic feet of luggage room. The Camry comes up short with up to 14.1 cubic feet in its base L trim and up to 15.1 cubes in all other trims.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • Horizontal layout make it feel wider
  • More premium standard features
  • Roomier rear seat
  • More trunk space

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Camry

  • More youthful and stylish dash design
  • A lot of style similarities to Avalon

Performance

Under its hood, the 2019 Toyota Avalon features a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

The 2019 Camry uses a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque in most trims. In the XSE trim, the Camry’s 2.5-liter engine produces 206 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. This power shoots through an eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheel.

The Camry has the same 301-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 as the Avalon, but it is an option on the XSE and XLE trims only. This engine also pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but its ratios are different from the four-cylinder Camry’s transmission.

In family sedans, fuel economy can play a huge role. The 2019 Toyota Avalon gets up to 22 mpg city, 32 highway, and 26 combined. The Camry V-6 is about the same at up to 22 mpg city, 33 highway, and 26 combined. The Camry gets a big-time fuel economy advantage with its standard four-cylinder engine that delivers up to 29 mpg city, 41 highway, and 34 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • Standard V-6 power
  • Smoother ride

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Camry

  • More engine options
  • Big fuel-economy payoff with the base engine
  • Sport-tuned SE and XSE models
