Toyota Camry Hybrid Vs. Toyota Corolla Hybrid

By Justin Cupler | April 18th, 2019

Toyota is the king of the hybrid segment, and here at Garber Toyota Fox Lake, we have plenty of hybrid vehicles for all our Waukegan shoppers. We even have the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid and the recently redesigned 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Wondering which of these hybrid sedans is better for you? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is just a year old, so it is still a modern-looking sedan that demands attention. Unlike other hybrids, the Camry also boasts a sporty look that adds an extra dimension to it. You can build upon this sportiness with the SE trim that includes black accents to increase its sporty feel.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is all-new, bringing in design elements from the new-for-2019 Corolla Hatchback. The biggest inheritance from the Hatchback is its nose, which boasts the same, squinty headlights and grille design, giving it a fresh and unique look. Setting the Corolla Hybrid apart from the rest of the Corolla lineup are its blue-accented badges.

The 2019 Camry Hybrid boasts a fully fleshed-out lineup, which means there are multiple trim options. While the options are nice, the base Corolla offers more value with its lower price and standard alloy wheels, high-grade LED headlights, sport mesh grille, and more. The Camry offers these features, but they come in higher trims that increase the MSRP.

Of course, the 2019 Camry Hybrid is larger than the Corolla Hybrid in every measurement.

Measurement 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Difference
Length 192.1 to 192.7 inches 183.1 inches +9 to +9.6 inches

  • More standard features

Interior

The 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid is stylish from the lowest trim to the range-topping model. What changes through these trims is their level of luxury, giving it a leg up on the single-trim Corolla Hybrid. Some styling bits that set off the Camry are its Y-shaped trim on the center stack, layered wood trim, gloss-black center stack bezel, and sharp seat pattern.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is not on par in terms of quality relative to the Camry Hybrid, but it is still hard to believe this is a Corolla. It boasts loads of soft-touch materials, a clean instrument panel, sharp gloss-black accents, and much more. For the younger crowd, the clean look and floating infotainment screen are huge selling points.

There are two standout differences between the Camry and Corolla that go counter what most buyers will expect. First, the Corolla has a larger touchscreen (8-inch versus 7-inch) and one extra USB port. Second, the Corolla’s cabin offers a whopping 3.4 extra inches of rear legroom. The Camry comes back in interior space with an extra 2.1 cubic feet of luggage space and additional hip and shoulder room.

Measurement 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid Difference
Front headroom 38.3 inches 38.3 inches +0 inches
Front legroom 42.1 inches 42.3 inches -0.2 inches
Front shoulder room 57.7 inches 54.8 inches +2.9 inches

Rear hip room 54.6 inches 43.9 inches +10.7 inches
Cargo room 15.1 cubic feet 13 cubic feet +2.1 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid

  • Upscale interior options
  • More peaceful cabin
  • More hip and shoulder room

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

  • Significantly more rear legroom
  • Larger standard touchscreen
  • Cleaner-looking dash

Performance

Neither the 2019 Camry Hybrid nor the 2020 Corolla Hybrid is a great performer, but they are not supposed to be. Instead, Toyota builds these hybrid sedans with an eye on thriftiness.

The 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor to produce 208 total horsepower. This results in a 7.4-second 0-to-60 time. While that is quick for a hybrid, what makes the Camry Hybrid great is its 46 to 52 mpg combined rating. Keep in mind that only the base Camry Hybrid LE gets 52 mpg combined thanks to its lithium-ion battery. All other trims use a less power-dense nickel metal hydride battery that cuts the fuel economy to 46 mpg combined.

The 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid has just 121 total horsepower coming from a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This amounts to an estimated 10-second 0-to-60 time and a 52 mpg combined rating.

Both models use an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive.

2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid [Car 2] Difference
Engine 2.5-liter 4-cyl 1.8-liter 4-cyl
Horsepower 176 hp at 5,700 rpm
Torque 163 lb-ft at 3,600 to 5,200 rpm
Electric horsepower 118 hp
Electric torque 149 lb-ft

MPG Highway 47 to 53 mpg 52 mpg -5 to +1 mpg
MPG Combined 46 to 52 mpg 52 mpg -6 to +0 mpg

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid

  • More power
  • Quicker to 60 mph

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

  • Better overall fuel economy
