Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs. Honda Fit: Two Ends of the Same Spectrum

By Justin Cupler | November 20th, 2018

Compact hatchbacks deliver a great balance of fuel economy, cargo hauling, and drivability that few other classes of vehicle can. Two of the best at combining all these benefits are the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and the 2019 Honda Fit. Which of these compact hatchbacks is the better buy for our Waukegan, McHenry, or Crystal Lake buyers? Keep reading to find out.

Exterior

While the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and 2019 Honda Fit share a segment as small hatchbacks, they are very different. The 2019 Honda Fit rolls in with a traditional appearance that offends no one and a high roofline to maximize interior room. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, on the other hand, takes on a far sportier appearance with its aggressive front and rear bumpers, sharp side sills, standard alloy wheels, big spoiler, and much more. Plus, the Corolla Hatchback has a much larger footprint than the Fit.

The Toyota Corolla is 169.9 inches long, 69.9 inches wide, and 57.1 inches tall. It rides atop a 103.9-inch wheelbase. The 2019 Honda Fit is significantly shorter from tail to nose and narrower at 161.4 to 161.8 inches long and 67 inches wide, respectively. It is, however, taller at 60 inches. This tiny body rides atop a 99.6-inch wheelbase.

The Fit’s smaller body and footprint make it a great option in busy cities with lots of traffic or when parking in crowded garages. The Corolla Hatchback’s longer wheelbase smooths out those bumpy city streets and fits its sporty attitude nicely.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

  • Sporty appearance
  • Standard alloy wheels (no hubcaps here!)
  • Longer, wider body does well in corners
  • Latest design language

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Tall roofline for interior space
  • Small footprint makes parking a breeze

Interior

Inside, the Toyota Corolla Hatchback and Honda Fit may seem very similar at first glance, but a closer look exposes big differences. The 2019 Honda Fit’s dashboard is more horizontal and relatively basic when compared to the swoopy lines that make up the Corolla’s dash. Moving to the seats, the Corolla Hatchback shows its sporty intentions with its larger bolsters up front.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback also includes a few more desirable standard features on the inside than the Fit. These include its Entune 3.0 Audio system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

In the front seats, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback boasts 38.4 inches of headroom, 42 inches of legroom, 54 inches of shoulder room, and 53.9 inches of hip room. The Fit beats the Corolla Hatchback in headroom by 1.1 inches and shoulder room by 0.8 inches, but it falls short of the Toyota hatchback in legroom by 0.6 inches and hip room by 2.4 inches.

In the rear, the 2019 Corolla Hatchback has 38 inches of headroom, 29.9 inches of legroom, 54.4 inches of shoulder room, and 45.5 inches of hip room. The 2019 Fit wins big in legroom by 8.4 inches, but it comes up short of the Corolla Hatchback by 0.5 inches in headroom, 1.8 inches in shoulder room, and 0.4 inches in hip room.

In the compact hatchback segment, cargo plays a huge role. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback wins in standard cargo capacity as its 18 cubic feet beats the Fit by 1.4 cubes. With the seats folded, Honda’s Magic Seat works its… well… magic and delivers 52.7 cubes to the Corolla Hatchback’s 23.3 cubic feet of cargo room.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

  • More standard features
  • Roomier front seats
  • More cargo room with the seats upright
  • Sore styling dash

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Tons of rear legroom
  • Magic Seat is certainly magical

Performance

Outside of the hot-hatch segment, compact hatchbacks rarely feature great performance, and the 2019 Honda Fit and 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback are no exceptions.

That said, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is no slouch either. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 168 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This routes through a standard six-speed manual transmission with rev matching or an optional continuously variable transmission for an independently tested 7.5-second sprint to 60 mph.

The 2019 Honda Fit is far less powerful as its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. This all routes through a six-speed manual transmission. Buyers can opt for a CVT, but there is a 2-horsepower and 1-pound-foot penalty for going automatic. This amounts to an independently tested 8.4-second sprint to 60 mph.

Despite its additional power, the 2019 Corolla Hatchback remains fuel efficient as its base trim with the manual transmission gets up to 28 mpg city, 37 highway, and 31 combined. You can take thriftiness further with the CVT that pushes fuel economy to 32 mpg city, 42 highway, and 36 combined. Opting for the heavier XSE model drags CVT fuel economy down to 30 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined.

The 2019 Honda Fit is also great on fuel with its manual-equipped models getting 29 mpg city, 36 highway, and 31 combined, while its CVT-equipped versions get 33 mpg city, 40 highway, and 36 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

  • Big power advantage
  • Slight highway fuel economy advantage

Advantage: 2019 Honda Fit

  • Small advantage in city fuel economy
