Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs. Mazda3 Hatchback

By Justin Cupler | July 23rd, 2019

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback are all-new this year and bring fresh faces and performance to the segment. While they have many similarities, the MAzda3 and Corolla Hatchback target different buyers in the Fox Lake area. Which is the better buy for you? Find out below.

Exterior

The Mazda3 Hatchback and Toyota Corolla Hatchback are both all-new for 2019, as the Mazda has gone through a full redesign and the Corolla Hatchback just returned after a long hiatus. The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback boasts a bold face that includes a massive lower grille, LED headlights, and gloss-black accents. Around back, the liftgate slants forward, adding to its sporty look, while faux dual exhaust tips on the rear fascia round out the look.

Opt for the Corolla’s XSE trim, and it looks even sharper with its standard LED fog lights and 18-inch wheels.

The all-new 2019 Mazda3 takes the brand’s KODO design to a new level with a longer nose, a forward-leaning grille, a rounded rear liftgate, LED lighting, 18-inch wheels, and more that makes this compact hatchback look more premium than its price tag implies.

Though they are both compact hatchbacks, the 2019 Corolla Hatchback is significantly smaller than the Mazda3 Hatchback. This makes it a better buy for folks who deal with heavy city traffic or often park in tight spaces.

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback boasts a clean interior with tons of horizontal lines to visually widen the cabin. It is also surprisingly upscale with its leatherette-wrapped dashboard and tech-focused with its Entune 8-inch infotainment system, standard Apple CarPlay, and more.

The 2019 Mazda3 Hatchback boasts an even more upscale interior with its standard leatherette seating, leatherette door panels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8.8-inch center infotainment screen, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The latter puts the Mazda3 slightly ahead of the Corolla, as the Toyota hatchback does not offer Android Auto. All this added luxury comes at a much higher price tag in the Mazda3.

In terms of seating room, the Corolla Hatchback has a big advantage in headroom, making it great for taller drivers. In the rear seats, though, the Mazda3 has a 5.2-inch legroom advantage, making it a better buy for families with older children. The Mazda3 also as a 2.3-cubic-foot cargo room advantage, which comes with the larger body.

Performance

The 2019 Toyota Corolla introduced a new engine to this lineup: the 2.0-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder. This powerplant pumps out 168 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque through a standard continuously variable transmission or an optional six-speed manual with rev-match. This delivers a 7.5-second 0-to-60 time with the manual transmission and an 8.5-second sprint time with the CVT while getting amazing fuel economy.

The Mazda3 has more power with a standard 2.5-liter four-pot that delivers 186 horsepower. This engine pairs with a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic transmission and has optional all-wheel drive for snowy climates. This adds up to a seven-second 0-to-60 sprint with front-wheel drive and a 7.2-second sprint with all-wheel drive. While it is quicker than the Corolla Hatchback, there is a tradeoff in fuel economy.
