Toyota Corolla Hybrid Vs. Honda Insight

By Justin Cupler | June 12th, 2019

Hybrid models have seen a resurgence with the return of one of the originators, the Honda Insight, and the arrival of the first-ever Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Which of these small hybrids is the better option for our shoppers near Waukegan? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Honda Insight is all new for 2019, but its looks should be familiar, as Honda based it on the existing Civic. Save for its more traditional taillights and more Accord-like front end, the Honda Insight is virtually identical to the Civic. This gives it a more upscale look than the Toyota Corolla Hybrid, making it a great option for more established buyers.

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid may be timid in performance, but its appearance is far sportier than the Insight. It pulls this sharp look from the critically acclaimed Corolla Hatchback, giving it a massive grille, sporty air intakes, and no shortage of angles and creases. While the Corolla Hybrid’s design is suitable for all buyers, its sportier take will draw in the younger crowd.

Other than its taller roofline, the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid is significantly smaller than the Insight. While this eats up some roominess inside, the smaller footprint makes it easier to manage in tight spaces.

Measurement 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid 2019 Honda Insight Difference
Length 182.3 inches 183.6 inches -1.3 inches
Width 70.1 inches 71.6  inches -1.5 inches
Height 56.5 inches 55.6 inches +0.9 inches
Wheelbase 106.3 inches 106.3 inches
Ground Clearance 5.1 inches
Curb weight 3,050 pounds 2,987 to 3,000 pounds +50 to +63 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda Insight

  • More upscale looks
  • Larger footprint gives more interior room

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

  • Smaller footprint
  • Stands out in a crowd
  • Standard LED lighting

Interior

Though it is based on the Civic, the 2019 Honda Insight’s cabin is more relaxed than its donor sedan. This helps it match better with its upscale exterior design and keep the interest of more discerning buyers. The 2019 Insight’s list of standard features is not great, as it comes with just a 5-inch non-touchscreen display and no advanced smartphone connectivity. Moving into the EX trim adds more tech features, like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen.

Slip inside the Corolla Hybrid, and you will question if this is really part of the Corolla lineup because of how tidy and organized it is. Don’t let its simple looks fool you, as this cabin is also chock-full with standard features, including a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, a six-speaker audio system, in-car Wi-Fi, and much more. The 2019 Insight doesn’t get these types of features until it hits the EX trim, but the Insight has the upper hand in top-level features because the Corolla Hybrid has just one trim and limited options.

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid lacks in lateral room inside its cabin, but it makes up for it in other places, including its full-size-rivaling 41.4 inches of rear legroom. The Insight comes back to win the cargo-room battle because the Corolla Hybrid’s batteries gobble up nearly 2 cubic feet of space.

Measurement 2020 Toyota Corolla 2019 Honda Insight Difference
Front headroom 38.3 inches 37.5 to 39.3 inches -1 to +0.8 inches
Front legroom 42.3 inches 42.3 inches

Rear hip room 43.9 inches 47.3 inches -3.4 inches
Cargo room 11.4 cubic feet 14.7 to 15.1 cubic feet -3.7 to -1.6 cubic feet

Advantage: 2019 Honda Insight

  • Large trunk
  • More lateral room

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

  • Incredible rear legroom
  • More standard technology
  • Clean, well-laid-out design

Performance

The Corolla Hybrid combines a 1.8-liter engine with an electric motor for a modest 121 horsepower. Where it makes up for its lack of power is efficiency, as it gets up to 53 mpg city, 52 highway, and 52 combined.

The Insight’s 1.5-liter engine and electric motor combine for 151 horsepower, giving it a surprisingly quick 7.7-second 0-to-60 time. Thought it is quicker, the Insight comes up short in overall fuel economy next to the Corolla Hybrid.
