Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Vs. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

By Justin Cupler | April 23rd, 2019

Crossovers are some of the most popular vehicles on sale today, and the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV give our Waukegan area shoppers green options. Both use electric motors to decrease fuel consumption, but they use them in different ways. Which one is the better option for you? Keep reading to find out.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is all-new and features a rugged look the model hasn’t had since its first model year. This new look includes a more upright, truck-like design that’s sure to cater to off-road enthusiasts. And despite being the thriftier version, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid boasts the same rugged looks.

The Mitsubishi Outlander lineup went through its last redesign in 2014, and the PHEV model debuted in 2018 with little more than some “PHEV” to set it apart. The Outlanders look is quite dated. In fact, it was dated even when it debuted, but its value is undeniable, so there are some tradeoffs to grabbing one.

In terms of size, the 2019 Outlander PHEV is larger than the RAV4 Hybrid in all measurements except wheelbase and ground clearance.

Measurement 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Difference
Length 180.9 inches 184.8 inches -3.9 inches
Width 73 inches 70.9 inches +2.1 inches
Height 67 inches 67.3 inches -0.3 inches
Wheelbase 105.9 inches 105.1 inches +0.8 inches
Ground Clearance 8.1 inches 7.3 inches +0.8 inches
Curb weight 3,710 to 3,800 pounds 4,178 pounds -468 to -378 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

  • Modern looks
  • More ground clearance for off-road driving
  • Smaller footprint

Advantage: 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

  • Toned-down looks

Inside the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, everything looks fresh thanks to its redesign. It also looks cleaner with its stubby gear shifter, limited knobs and buttons, dash-top touchscreen, and small air vents. This lack of clutter also makes it feel wider and roomier than it actually is.

The 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV’s interior, while not ugly, looks dated. Add to this dated look all the advanced features that the advanced powertrain comes with, including a digital instrument cluster and electronic gear shifter, is it looks almost like a resto-mod project.

In terms of standard features, the 2019 Outlander PHEV crushes most in its class with goodies like leather seats with eight-way power adjustment up front, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, a power liftgate, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more. The RAV4 Hybrid, though, is safer with its standard automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and more.

Crossovers rarely fall into the performance segment, and this becomes even less likely when you add a hybrid powertrain to the mix. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter engine and a pair of electric motors to pump out 219 horsepower and sprint it to 60 mph in a surprising 7.5 seconds. And it does all this while getting 40 mpg combined.

The 2019 Outlander PHEV plug-inch-hybrid powertrain delivers just 190 horsepower, but it makes up for this with a 22-mile all-electric range. This heavier lower-powered crossover sloshes its way to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds. Plus, it gets just 25 mpg combined after depleting its charge.
