Toyota Sequoia Vs. Chevy Tahoe

By Justin Cupler | May 17th, 2019

The full-size SUV is a dying breed, but it still has some fight left in it. Two models fighting the pro-SUV battle are the 2019 Toyota Sequoia and 2019 Chevy Tahoe. Both models offer our Waukegan area shoppers great room and power, but which is best for you? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Chevy Tahoe and 2019 Toyota Sequoia are full-size, rugged SUVs designed to haul people, cargo, and a good-size trailer with ease. To make them so capable, the automakers based them on their respective full-size pickup trucks.

Despite being based on the Toyota Tundra, the Toyota Sequoia has a personality all its own with wider headlights and grille that flow back into the traditional two-box SUV design with more rounded edges. On the outside, the Sequoia starts off relatively basic in its SR5 trim, but it gets quite luxurious in its Platinum trim, which features 20-inch wheels, a chrome grille, chrome mirror caps, and more. Buyers looking for something sportier can opt for the TRD Sport model that adds black wheels and badges, and a sport-tuned suspension.

The 2019 Chevy Tahoe also separates itself from its pickup source material with a more stylish front end. From the fenders back, the Tahoe has a more upright stance than the Sequoia, making it look larger than it is. Like the Toyota, the Tahoe starts off with the basic outward appearance in its LS trim but gets quite luxurious with HID headlights and shiny 20-inch wheels. Want a little more sportiness and performance? Opt for the Premier trim with the RST Edition package to get black accents and a big power upgrade.

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Toyota Sequoia caters to the truck fans of the world with its chunky dashboard that boasts large knobs and easy-to-press buttons, much like the Tundra pickup. This makes it super-easy to operate with gloves on, but it also draws away some of the luxury feel when you’re in the higher-trimmed models.

The 2019 Tahoe, however, takes a different approach, softening up its pickup roots and making things a little more commuter-friendly. These include more compact knobs and buttons, some contrasting leather, and a shaplier dash.

As for standard features, the Tahoe has a leg up in the infotainment space with the more intuitive Chevrolet Infotainment System with a larger 8-inch screen. Plus, the Tahoe has standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are not available in the Sequoia. The Sequoia comes back with more standard safety goodies, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.

In terms of roominess, the 2019 Sequoia has a big lapse in headroom, but it is larger in most other measurables. The biggest advantage of owning the 2019 Sequoia is its massive cargo area.

Performance

Massive SUVs like the 2019 Toyota Sequoia and 2019 Chevy Tahoe need all the power they can get to move their big bodies. This is why they both come standard with V-8 powerplants.

The 2019 Sequoia’s 5.7-liter V-8 pounds out 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque that help deliver a 6.7-second 0-to-60 time and a 7,400-pound towing capacity. The 2019 Tahoe’s standard 5.3-liter V-8 is a little shy on power at 355 horses, but its strong chassis can tow 1,200 pounds more than the Sequoia.

The 2019 Tahoe has one trick up its sleeve in the Premier RST Edition with its 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V-8 that delivers a 5.7-second 0-to-60 time.
