Toyota Sienna Vs. Honda Odyssey

By Justin Cupler | June 11th, 2019

The Toyota Sienna made a name for itself thanks to its stylish looks and relatively good performance in years past. This earned the Swagger Wagon moniker, but how does this older gent stack up to the latest and greatest in the segment, like the 2019 Honda Odyssey? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Honda Odyssey went through a redesign in 2019, bringing in a brand-new look that helped keep this top-selling minivan up to date. The new look was far from revolutionary, but it was enough for this slow-changing segment. The 2019 Odyssey boasts a traditional two-box wedge shape with slick character lines down the sides and massive windows that help with outward visibility.

The Toyota Sienna is long in the tooth, as it went through its last redesign way back in 2011. It has seen a few updates since then, and the most recent one is the 2020 addition of the Nightshade Edition. This package, which is available in the SE and SE Premium trims, starts from $700 and adds a black sport mesh grille, black door handles, black 19-inch wheels, a black spoiler, black mirror caps, and black Toyota badges. This blacked-out package adds a touch of sinister to this otherwise normal minivan.

In terms of size, the 2020 Toyota Sienna is smaller than the Odyssey in length and width, making it a bit more manageable in tight quarters.

Measurement 2020 Toyota Sienna 2019 Honda Odyssey Difference
Length 200.6 inches 203.2 inches -2.6 inches
Width 78.1 inches 78.5 inches -0.4 inches
Height 68.9 to 71.3 inches 68.3 to 69.6 inches +0.6 to +1.7 inches
Wheelbase 119.3 inches 118.1 inches +1.2 inches
Ground Clearance 6.2 to 6.6 inches
Curb weight 4,430 to 4,750 pounds 4,354 to 4,593 pounds +76 to +157 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda Odyssey

  • More modern look
  • Massive glass makes outward visibility superior

Advantage: 2020 Toyota Sienna

  • Smaller and easier to manage
  • New Nightshade package adds a custom look
  • Still looks the part of the “swagger wagon”

Interior

Inside, the age gap between these minivans shows. The 2019 Honda Odyssey boasts the latest in controls and layouts with a push-button transmission, well-organized and logical button placement, and more up front. In the rear, the available Magic Slide second-row seats makes getting into the third row a breeze, and the HondaVAC in-car vacuum makes on-the-go clean up of the kids’ messes possible.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna shows its age with its simple control layout, traditional gear shifter, and lack of any creative seating hacks. It does, however, have a handful of modern features to match the Odyssey, including its available in-car PA system, Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and rear-seat entertainment system. But it lacks the in-car Vacuum, a rear-seat monitor, and the all-important Android Auto interface.

It seating room, the 2020 Toyota Sienna comes up short in most of the main measurables, but all three rows offer more lateral room, making it great for fitting three across each row. Cargo space goes firmly in the Odyssey’s win column with up to 8 more cubes of space than the Sienna.

In terms of features, the Toyota Sienna has more in its base model than the Odyssey. The Toyota’s standard features include a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Siri Eyes Free, and more. You have to move into the $34,000 Odyssey EX to get these features.

Performance

The 2020 Toyota Sienna and 2019 Honda Odyssey both feature 3.5-liter V-6 engines, but the Sienna has a 16-horsepower and 1-pound-foot advantage at 296 ponies and 263 pound-feet. The Sienna also has available all-wheel drive, making it the only minivan with this slick-weather-ready option. The Odyssey comes back with its two advanced transmission options: a standard nine-speed unit and an optional 10-speed.

The 2020 Sienna adds a slight twist with its sporty SE models that boast sport-tuned steering and larger wheels. Sure, these are far from performance models, but they offer a little extra fun the Odyssey lacks.
