Toyota Tacoma Vs. GMC Canyon

By Justin Cupler | July 24th, 2019

Midsize pickups must check many boxes to meet a wide range of buyers’ needs, including efficiency, capability, drivability, and more. Two great options in this class are the 2019 Toyota Tacoma and 2019 GMC Canyon. Which is the better option for our Fox Lake area buyers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The midsize truck segment has been through huge changes in recent years, and the Toyota Tacoma and GMC Canyon are leaders of this push. The 2019 Toyota Tacoma went through its last redesign in 2016, gaining a rugged and angular front end, more aggressive body lines, and more.

While this new style is great for buyers seeking a rugged look, buyers who want even more aggressiveness can opt for the TRD Pro model with its exclusive cat-back exhaust, raised suspension, 16-inch TRD Pro black-painted alloy wheels, black sport headlight and taillight bezels, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, a unique black grille with block “TOYOTA” lettering, and black-painted badges, hood scoop and overfenders

The GMC Canyon had its last redesign in 2015, marking the automaker’s return to the midsize segment. This new-look pickup looks a lot like its big brother with its upright front eng, large grille, bold shoulders, flared fenders, and more, giving is a toned-down look that fits a wider range of buyers. Like the Tacoma, the Canyon has a rugged model known as the All Terrain that adds Dark Argent wheels and black recovery hooks. Opt for the All Terrain X package and add black 3-inch round step bars, a spray-on bed liner, and Goodyear Duratrac tires.

In its largest formats, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is larger than the Canyon. The biggest difference is its 9.4 inches of ground clearance, which is 1 to 1.3 inches more than he Canyon offers. This puts the Tacoma in a special place in the hearts of off-roaders

Interior

The 2019 Toyota Tacoma brings its sharp exterior design inside with its circular air vents, striking center bezel, contrasting dash accent, unique four-post steering wheel, and flat dash top. As a pickup truck, the 2019 Toyota Tacoma is relatively well-equipped in its base SR trim. Its standard features include Air conditioning, three USB ports, cloth seating, steering-wheel-mounted controls, a 4.2-inch color multi-information display, the Entune Audio infotainment system, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, Siri Eyes Free, and more.

As a Toyota, the Tacoma has loads of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, sway warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic radar cruise control, hill-start assist, and an engine immobilizer.

The 2019 GMC Canyon’s cabin is nowhere near as wildly styled as the Tacoma’s. Instead, the 2019 Canyon features a more traditional design with a relatively plain instrument panel, silver infotainment bezel, four-post steering wheel, and more. The standard Canyon SL is work-ready with its vinyl seating and flooring, but its tech is superior to the Tacoma with its 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.

Though it has the tech features, the Canyon falls short in safety, as it lacks the standard advanced safety features the Tacoma has. The Canyon offers them as options, but they are costly.

In terms of interior roominess, the 2019 Tacoma beats the Canyon in shoulder and hip room, but it comes up way short in legroom across the board.

Performance

The midsize pickup segment must balance fuel economy and capability, so they often have two or more powertrain options. The 2019 Tacoma comes standard with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, the Tacoma has a respectable capability with a 3,500-pound towing capacity and a 1,620-pound payload capacity.

Optionally, buyers can swap in a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. This engine delivers a 6,700-pound towing capacity and a 1,540-pound payload capacity.

The 2019 Tacoma has a few variants for specific buyers too. The TRD Off-Road model adds performance bits to help you off the beaten path, including a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, Multi-terrain Select and Crawl Control, electronically controlled locking rear differential, and a TRD-tuned off-road suspension with Bilstein shocks. The TRD Sport model also adds the 3.5-liter V-6, but it takes a more street-performance stance with its TRD sport-tuned suspension.

The Tacoma TRD Pro takes what the TRD Off-Road model offers and pushes it a step further with its standard four-wheel drive, TRD Pro cat-back exhaust, TRD-tuned off-road suspension, 2.5-inch FOX internal bypass shocks, rear remote-reservoir shocks, Active Traction Control, six-speed manual transmission, and 16-inch TRD Pro black-painted alloy wheels.

The 2019 GMC Canyon also uses a standard four-cylinder engine, but this 2.5-liter unit pumps out a healthy 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. This engine matches the Tacoma’s base 3,500-pound towing capacity.

The 2019 Canyon’s optional 3.6-liter V-6 delivers 308 horsepower that gives it a 7,700-pound towing capacity. Want more towing power and efficiency? The optional 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder delivers 186 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which helps the Canyon tow up to 7,700-pound towing capacity and 30 mpg combined.
