Commute with the Right Car: 2019 Camry vs 2019 Corolla

By Emily Eppley | October 12th, 2018

Toyota’s staple commuter cars are no longer the boring, featureless sedans of yore. Now, they are modern, efficient, and filled with thoughtful comfort, convenience, and safety tech to keep you comfortable and entertained.

While the 2019 Toyota Camry and 2019 Toyota Corolla have many similarities, each model has distinctions tuned toward its target audience. Check out what sets these two cars apart to see which one is right for you to drive around Waukegan, Illinois.

Exterior

The size difference between the Camry and Corolla is the first notable distinction between these sedans, but their exteriors also have unique personalities. The Toyota Camry is a midsize sedan, giving is more room for carpooling than the compact, but the Corolla’s smaller footprint makes it a good option for to take to Chicago when you try to fit into tiny parking spaces.

The 2019 Camry has an all-new exterior that’s unlike any other Toyota. At 192.1 inches long, 72.4 inches wide, and 56.9 inches high, the 2019 Camry has a wider and longer stance than before that’s enhanced by its assertive grille and crisp, clean lines. This new body gives the Camry a more athletic look and brings a sportier feel to your daily commute.

The slightly smaller Corolla is just 183.1 inches long, 69.9 inches wide, and 57.3 inches tall, making it easier to squeeze into tight parking spaces and just right for zipping around town. The Corolla’s exterior features a more traditional commuter-car design, which appeals to buyers looking for fewer frills.

2019 Toyota Camry Advantages

  • Sportier look

2019 Toyota Corolla Advantages

  • Easier to maneuver
  • Simpler appearance

Interior

The driver can bring along four passengers in both the cars. And while the legroom is almost the same in the front row, the trunk and rear seating vary between the Camry and Corolla.

There is less than an inch difference in front-seat legroom between the two cars — 42.1 inches in the Camry and 42.3 in the Corolla — but you’ll see a bigger gap in the second row where the Camry has only 38 inches of legroom to the Corolla’s surprising 41.4 inches.

While it might seem backward for the midsize to have less room in the second row, the Camry makes up for it in the trunk. The Camry has up to 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk (14.1 cubes in the L trim), while the Corolla has only 13 cubes of space.

The family resemblance between the interiors is clear with both cars offering similar upholstery and convenience features. Both sedans offer a 7-inch touchscreen display with available Entune, but the Camry has a higher threshold that includes more premium features like a 10-inch touchscreen and leather seating.

2019 Toyota Camry Advantages

  • Higher ceiling on optional equipment
  • Larger trunk

2019 Toyota Corolla Advantages

  • An extra 3.4 inches of legroom

Performance

The 2019 Camry kicks things off with more engine options that begin with the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers up to 206 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. For more power, upgrade to the 3.5-liter V-6 engine that bumps the output to 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. Both engine options come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the front wheels.

The 2019 Corolla has just one available engine: the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine delivers an 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque in most trim levels, but the LE Eco trim’s version of this engine punches out 140 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. In the LE Eco, this engine pairs only to a continuously variable transmission, while the rest of the lineup pairs with either a six-speed manual or CVT.

Both models have eco-friendly options, but the Corolla doesn’t force you to commit to advanced and potentially costly hybrid system to get great fuel economy. The LE Eco’s reconfigured powertrain makes it the most fuel-efficient 2019 Corolla with an EPA-rated 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.

In the Camry, you can choose the hybrid model that pairs an electric motor with the 2.5-liter engine. This combination results in 208 horsepower and an EPA-estimated 51 mpg city and 53 mpg highway. The Camry Hybrid lacks a traditional transmission, but it has simulated gearshifts you can control with paddle shifters for a sportier feel and a familiar control.

2019 Toyota Camry Advantages

  • More dynamic driving experience with V-6 engine
  • 50-plus mpg Hybrid option

2019 Toyota Corolla Advantages

  • Up to 40 mpg without hybrid tech
  • Available manual transmission
