Toyota Avalon Vs. Lexus ES 350

By Justin Cupler | March 9th, 2019

While Toyota has its own branded premium sedan in the all-new 2019 Avalon, it also has the Lexus brand and the all-new ES 350. While these models share many components, including a platform and powertrain, they have distinct target markets. Which of these sedans is best for our McHenry area car shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Lexus ES 350 and Toyota Avalon share more than just a parent manufacturer; they also share a platform and powertrain. The former also means they share many of their hard parts, including some body panels. Both models went through complete redesigns in 2019 that ushered in longer, lower, and wider bodies that are more stylish that before.

The 2019 Lexus ES 350 is a true luxury sedan, so it features more upscale exterior features, including standard 17-inch split-10-spoke alloy wheels. The ES 350’s base appearance is also more upscale looking with its bold grille and lighting.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon also boasts a premium look, but it’s simpler with less dramatic lighting style and smoother likes. It’s definitely better suited for a buyer looking for something a bit more toned down.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon is 195.9 inches long, 72.8 inches wide, and 56.5 inches tall. It rides on a 113-inch wheelbase and weighs 3,560 to 3,704 pounds.

The 2019 Lexus ES is 195.9 inches long, 73.4 inches wide, and 56.9 inches wide. The 2019 ES rides on a 113-inch wheelbase and weighs 3,649 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • Toned-down design language
  • Still looks like a premium sedan

Advantage: 2019 Lexus ES

  • More aggressive styling stands out in a crowd
  • Looks like a legit luxury sedan

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Toyota Avalon has a lot to love with its standard 7-inch touchscreen, eight-speaker audio system, and leatherette upholstery. It also boasts a horizontal-line-focused dash that makes the already broad interior feel even wider.

The Lexus ES 350 is a true luxury sedan, so it has a pile more standard features, including perforated leatherette upholstery, an eight-speaker audio system, active noise cancellation, a 10-speaker audio system, 10-way power seats, and more.

In its front seats, the 2019 Toyota Avalon offers 38.5 inches of headroom, 42.1 inches of legroom, 58.3 inches of shoulder room, and 55.8 inches of hip room. The 2019 Lexus ES 350 has an extra 0.3 inches of legroom, but it falls short in headroom by 0.9 inches, shoulder room by 2.4 inches, and hip room by 0.8 inches

In the rear, the Avalon has 37.9 inches of headroom, 40.3 inches of legroom, 57.1 inches of shoulder room, and 54.8 inches of hip room. The 2019 LExus ES 350’s rear seats come up short of the Avalon’s back seats by 0.1 inches of headroom, 1.1 inches of legroom, 2.8 inches of shoulder room, and 0.5 inches of hip room.

In its trunk, the Avalon has 16.09 cubic feet of luggage room. The 2019 Lexus ES 350’s trunk is a bit larger than the Avalon’s at 16.7 cubic feet.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • Horizontal layout make it feel wider
  • Great luxury features for the price

Advantage: 2019 Lexus ES

  • Active noise cancellation
  • More standard high-tech features

Performance

Under its hood, the 2019 Toyota Avalon features a standard 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 301 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a standard eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

The 2019 Lexus ES 350 comes standard with the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine as the Avalon, but it has 302 horsepower — a 1-horsepower advantage — and 267 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs to an eight-speed automatic transmission that ships power out to the front wheels.

In family sedans, fuel economy can play a huge role. The 2019 Toyota Avalon gets up to 22 mpg city, 32 highway, and 26 combined. The 2019 Lexus ES 350 gets roughly the same fuel economy as the Avalon at up to 22 mpg city, 33 highway, and 26 combined.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Avalon

  • Nearly the same power as the Lexus

Advantage: 2019 Lexus ES

  • Quieter ride
