Toyota RAV4 Vs. Honda CR-V: Compact Crossovers Compete

By Justin Cupler | January 2nd, 2019

Compact crossovers are some of the hottest-selling vehicles on the market, and there are two that regularly crush the competition: the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is all-new, and the Honda CR-V went through its redesign in 2017. Which of these vehicles is best for our Fox Lake, Illinois buyers? Continue reading to find out.

The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is all-new and looks nothing like before. It now boasts a sharp, off-road-focused appearance that shatters the mold of the compact-crossover segment. The 2019 Honda CR-V is no old-timer itself, as it received a redesign of its own back in 2017, giving it a sharp, evolutionary look.

The RAV4, though, is a standout in the segment. This rugged, new look gives it a sense of uniqueness in an otherwise vanilla segment. Plus, add the higher-riding Adventure trim, and you get a crossover that not only looks rugged but can handle itself off the beaten path too.

Despite its rugged looks, the 2019 RAV4 is still about the same size as others in its class at 180.9 to 181.5 inches long, 73 to 73.4 inches wide, and 67 to 68.6 inches tall. It rides on a 105.9-inch wheelbase and offers 8.4 to 8.6 inches of ground clearance. The 2019 Honda CR-V measures 180.6 inches long, 73 inches wide, and 66.1 to 66.5 inches tall. Its wheelbase is 104.7 inches long, and it sits 7.8 to 8.2 inches off the ground.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4

  • Big, rugged look for its class
  • Significant ride height advantage
  • Adventure trim is sharp

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Traditional looks
  • Smaller footprint is easier to zip through traffic

Inside, the 2019 Toyota RAV4’s new look is just as sharp as its new-look exterior. Its horizontally oriented dash lacks any overly dramatic shapes. This helps drivers channel their internal off-road enthusiast while its upscale options and chunky center console give it a classier aura. The 2019 Honda CR-V has a more traditional crossover look with its curvy design, dash-mounted gear shifter, and more focus on roominess than ruggedness.

Both of these compact crossovers have plenty of features to play around with, even in their base trims. Inside the RAV4 LE, buyers will find a 7-inch touchscreen, Scout GPS Link, a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, and more. The base 2019 Honda CR-V LX comes with a 5-inch touchscreen, a four-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a multi-angle rearview camera, and more.

In the front seats, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 has 39.5 inches of headroom, 41 inches of legroom, 57.8 inches of shoulder room, and 54.3 inches of hip room. The CR-V has an extra 0.6 inches of headroom, 0.3 inches of headroom, 0.1 inches of shoulder room, and 0.8 inches of hip room.

In its rear seats, the 2019 Toyota RAV4 offers 39.5 inches of headroom, 37.8 inches of legroom, 56.4 inches of shoulder room, and 47.7 inches of hip room. The CR-V has 0.3 inches less headroom and 0.8 inches less shoulder room, but it wins by 2.6 inches in legroom and 1.8 inches in hip room.

Cargo room plays a big role in any compact crossover purchase, and the RAV4 delivers 37.6 cubic feet of room with the rear seats up, but there is no max cargo rating available yet. The 2019 Honda CR-V offers 39.2 cubic feet with its rear seats up and a massive 75.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4

  • Sharp interior, especially in the Adventure trim
  • Larger standard touchscreen
  • More rear shoulder room and headroom

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Classic crossover styling
  • Standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • More seating and cargo room

Performance is never a huge deal for any compact crossover shopper. The 2019 RAV4 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out a respectable 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through an eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheel drive. Optionally, buyers can add all-wheel drive.

The Honda CR-V has two engines, and its standard powerplant is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit that produces 184 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. In EX and higher trims, the CR-V comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. Both engines pair with a continuously variable transmission that ships the power to the front wheels or all four wheels.

Fuel economy is one of the keys for buying these small crossovers, and both the CR-V and RAV4 deliver admirably. The CR-V with the 2.4-liter engine delivers up to 26 mpg city, 32 highway, and 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and up to 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. With the 1.5-liter, the CR-V delivers up to 28 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and up to 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 mpg combined with all-wheel drive.

While the CR-V delivers good fuel economy, the RAV4 one-ups it slightly. With front-wheel drive, the 2019 RAV4 delivers up to 26 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 mpg combined. The All-wheel-drive 2019 RAV4 delivers up to 27 mpg city, 34 highway, and 30 mpg combined in its LE trim and up to 27 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 mpg combined in all other trims.

In towing, the RAV4 gets a huge leg up with its 3,500-pound towing capacity in the Adventure trim, which crushes the CR-V’s 1,500-pound capacity. The rest of the RAV4 lineup matches the CR-V’s 1,500-pound rating. The CR-V comes back in payload with its 1,183- to 1,388-pound payload capacity. This beats the RAV4 by 93 to 148 pounds.

Advantage: 2019 Toyota RAV4

  • Big power advantage
  • Better fuel economy
  • More than double the max towing capacity

Advantage: 2019 Honda CR-V

  • Zippy turbocharged engine
