Toyota Yaris Sedan Vs. Toyota Corolla

By Justin Cupler | March 27th, 2019

Small sedans were once simply four wheels and a few seats to get people from point A to point B. Today, these subcompact and compact sedans offer buyers more than just simple transportation, and the 2019 Toyota Corolla and 2019 Toyota Yaris Sedan fall into that category. Which of these small Toyota sedans is better for our McHenry area shoppers? Find out below.

Exterior

On the outside, you may notice that despite being siblings, the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Yaris Sedan look nothing alike. There is a good reason for that: the Yaris Sedan is adopted. That’s right, the Toyota Yaris Sedan is actually a re-engineered Mazda2 sedan, which means it has a style all its own, giving it a sportier look to match its peppier performance.

The Toyota Corolla is a stalwart in the industry and doesn’t change much throughout the years because there is no need to. It still looks sharp despite being six model years old and continues to sell well. Like the Yaris Sedan, the Corolla has a sporty side to its with its angular nose and sharp headlights, but that’s about the extent of its sportiness.

As Toyota’s subcompact entry-level sedan, the Yaris Sedan is significantly smaller than the Corolla, which now borders on being a small midsize sedan. With this small body, it’s no shock the 2019 Yaris Sedan is over 400 pounds lighter than the Corolla.

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Toyota Yaris again shows its adopted DNA, as Mazda hints are all over the place. The first hints are all the sporty round items, including the HVAC vents, the steering wheel center, the HVAC controls, and more. The Toyota Yaris also boasts Mazda’s 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with central rotary dial. This all makes the Toyota Yaris stand out on the Toyota Showroom.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla has a very basic interior design that caters to a broader audience. It lacks all the shapes and pizzaz the Yaris boasts and uses a more upright design instead. There is still some sleekness with its black infotainment bezel that makes that whole section appear gloss-black when the screen is off, but it is otherwise a basic design built with the masses in mind.

In terms of being family friendly, the Corolla is the larger of the two sedans. This is especially  true in the rear where the Corolla’s inches of rear legroom beats the Yaris Sedan by  7 inches. Its front seats are also larger in shoulder room. Oddly enough, the tiny Yaris’ trunk beats the Corolla by 0.5 cubic.

Performance

Small sedans like the Corolla and Yaris are not ones for cranking out loads of power, but they are respectable. The 2019 Toyota Yaris boasts a 106-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that flows through a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

The 2019 Corolla uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 132 horsepower in its base model or 140 horsepower in the LE Eco trim. This engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission or an optional six-speed manual in the SE trim.

Neither sedan is particularly quick, but the Yaris’ 8.7-second 0-to-60 time beats the Corolla by 1.2 seconds, despite the big power deficiency. The Yaris also gets significantly better fuel economy.
