Small Hatchback Shootout: 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Vs. 2019 Honda Fit

By Justin Cupler | October 5th, 2018

Searching for a compact hatchback in Chicago, Illinois results in tons of options ranging from low-power, high-efficiency models to high-performing pocket rockets. Sitting in the middle of this range are the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and 2019 Honda Fit. These compact hatchbacks have a lot to offer new car buyers in Fox Lake, Illinois, but which is the better new car to buy in the Chicago area?

Check out our Toyota Corolla Hatchback versus Honda Fit comparison to find out.

The 2019 Honda Fit is your plain-Jane hatchback with limited flair. Moving into the Sport trim adds a few visual upgrades, including fog lights, a rear diffuser, orange accents, a chrome exhaust tip, and more, but it is still a traditional-looking hatchback. For Chicago new car buyers looking for simple transportation seek, the 2019 Fit may be the perfect hatchback for you.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a stark contrast as it ushers in a new take on the hatchback design. It breaks away from its sedan sibling and brings in aggressive headlights and taillights, a wide lower air intake, flared shoulders, and swooping liftgate glass. This sportier appearance draws in the younger crowd who want that hot-hatch look but still need an affordable price.

Part of what makes the Corolla Hatchback so sporty looking is its size. At 169.9 inches long and 69.9 inches wide, it is longer than the Fit by 8.5 inches and wider by 2.9 inches. While this extra size adds to its style, the smaller Honda Fit is better suited for handling tighter space, like driving in Chicago traffic and parking, thanks to its smaller footprint.

Inside, the Honda Fit continues with its simple styling by keeping things simple. The dash is clear of too many buttons and knobs as the infotainment system handles most of the controls. The Fit also includes a large speedometer centrally mounted in the gauge cluster, making is easy to read.

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback continues its sporty ways inside too. It boasts a sporty three-spoke steering wheel, a floating 8-inch infotainment screen, brushed trim, and multi-color seats to better match its stylish shell.

While some new car buyers in Fox Lake may love this simple cabin, others may hate it. But there is no hatred tossed toward the Fit’s roominess. This small hatchback boasts one of the roomiest cabins in its class with up to 39.3 inches of rear legroom. The Corolla Hatchback offers just 29.9 inches of rear legroom, but it makes up for it by offering 1.8 inches more rear shoulder room at 54.4 inches.

Cargo hauling is another area where the 2019 Fit dominates everything in its class with its up to 52.7 cubic feet of cargo area with the seats folded. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback maxes out at 23.3 cubes with its rear seats folded, which is still plenty for the kid’s sports equipment or a week’s worth of groceries.

No one will ever mistake the 2019 Honda Fit for a hot hatchback with its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 130 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque when paired to the standard six-speed manual transmission. The power drops by 2 horsepower and 1 pound-feet of torque with the optional continuously variable transmission.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is all over the performance side of things with its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that injects 168 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs to either a six-speed manual or a CVT. While this doesn’t make the Corolla Hatchback a performance model, it puts it well in front of the Fit.

Both hatchbacks run similar fuel-economy numbers. With the manual transmission, the Corolla Hatch gets up to 28 mpg city, 37 highway, and 31 combined, while the Fit gets 29 mpg city, 36 highway, and 31 combined. Opting for the CVT bumps the Corolla Hatchback’s fuel economy to up to 32 mpg city, 42 highway, and 36 combined, while the CVT increases the Fit to up to 33 mpg city, 40 highway, and 36 combined. Whether you’re commuting to Waukegan or taking a weekend trip to Twin Lakes, both hatchbacks will save you money.
